This tour is also available as a road cycling tour, ideal if you prefer smooth tarmac and want to explore the same stunning Saxon villages without the gravel and singletrack.
Discover Transylvania’s rich Saxon heritage on a gravel cycling adventure that takes you deep into the countryside on quiet gravel tracks, forest trails and singletrack paths. The route begins outside Sibiu, from where you’ll continue to Hoșman, Alma Vii, Biertan, Mălâncrav and Criș, stopping at each location to learn about the area’s rich history and marvel at the stunning architecture.
We’ll spend a night in Sighișoara, one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval citadels and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s also the starting point of the country’s best singletrack trail, leading us south through wild forests to our final destination, the charming Saxon village of Viscri. Throughout the tour, you’ll sample local cuisine, meet craftsmen still plying traditional trades, and soak in the breathtaking beauty of Transylvania’s rural landscape. An unforgettable gravel cycling experience.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Peter's local and historical knowledge provided for an incredible in-depth experience we could never come close to without him guiding us. The home stays were super cozy and welcoming while the local gastro points were delicious. It was nice to know we were supporting the small local economy and conservation fund. (...) I wouldn't hesitate at all to book another tour with Peter and Wiredonkey.— Jake W.
Price includes: accommodation for 5 nights in traditional guesthouses; meals (5 breakfasts, 6 lunches, 5 dinners); bike rentals and helmets; luggage transportation; entrance fees; English speaking local guide.
Doesn't include: your flight, airport transfer, insurance, personal expenses.
Most convenient is to transfer from Brașov, Sibiu or Cluj, where you can spend a couple of days before or after the trip. You can transfer on your own, or we can arrange a transfer for you (not included in the price).
We start our trip just outside Avrig, 30-minutes away from Sibiu. We chose this place as our starting point, because it has a 5 kilometre bike path at the beginning, which gives you a chance to get accustomed to your bikes. We'll stop by the palace in Avrig to learn about the Bruckenthal family history.
Leaving the valley of the Olt river behind, we'll head towards Hoșman. Make sure you look back for some imposing views of the Făgăraș mountains. Our day ends in Alma Vii, a quaint Saxon village nestled in an untravelled valley.
The highlight of our day will be in Biertan, a town famous for its 13th-century fortified church, which has been a part of the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1993. A gothic masterpiece with 3 levels of walls forming rings around it, arguably the most beautiful church in Transylvania.
We'll fill up with local delicacies before hitting more challenging gravel roads. From Nou Săsesc, we might choose to cycle around the mountain or pushbike until our home for the night, Mălâncrav, where we'll spend the night like royalty at the Apafi Manor.
From Mălâncrav, we'll follow wonderful valleys and quiet back roads to Criș, home to a nicely restored 15th-century renaissance castle. Hidden between the hills, it used to be the residence of the Bethlen family.
From Criș, we'll ride through hills and dense forests, including the Breite Reserve, home to spectacular centuries-old oaks, and arrive in Sighișoara, our final destination for the day.
Sighișoara is perhaps the quintessential Saxon town in Transylvania, with a beautifully preserved medieval citadel. It's also the birthplace of Vlad Țepeș, ruler of Wallachia and inspiration for Bram Stoker's Count Dracula. We'll spend the rest of the day wandering the cobblestone streets of the old town, listening to mysterious stories and legends.
In the morning, we'll have some more time to spend in Sighișoara before hitting the country's best single-trail bike path. We'll follow this path south, through seemingly impenetrable forests, until our overnight stop in Saschiz.
Here we'll visit the UNESCO World Heritage Fortified Church, the Peasant Castle and indulge on local delicacies.
Today we'll continue to follow the same single-path trail for a while more before reaching the final destination of our tour. Viscri is probably the most famous village in Transylvania, thanks to Prince (well, King now) Charles, who owns a house here.
Viscri also has a beautifully preserved fortified church, our final World Heritage List spot. While in the village, we can visit blacksmiths and artisanal shops and see the craftsmen at work.
Our time in Saxon Transylvania has unfortunately come to an end. From Viscri, you can transfer back to Sibiu or Cluj, or you can travel to Brașov, an exciting city to explore. If you need a guide, you know where to look!

In general, cycling here is safe and incredibly rewarding, especially on quiet rural roads.
The main things to be aware of are traffic behavior, road surfaces, and (in some regions) animals.
We've written a detailed, experience-based guide covering cycling safety in Romania.
Our tours run from April to October. The best months are May, June, and September — comfortable temperatures, quiet roads, and the landscape at its best. July and August are fine for most tours but can be hot. April and October offer dramatic scenery but colder mornings and occasional rain, so pack layers.

Most of our bike tours are designed in a 'slow ride' spirit, allowing our guests to truly immerse themselves in the local culture and landscape. However, a lot of tour days offer the possibility for multiple ride options to accommodate rides of different levels. Some may take a detour to include an additional site. Some might go over the mountain, while others might want to go around. Please ask your guide to recommend you the best option.
The support vehicle also offers up some additional options. You can hitch a ride over a major climb or head to the next town for extra exploration time.
If you feel you can't finish the whole distance because you're tired, we'll take a rest. No one is in a hurry.
If you're really feeling out of it and can't continue, you can hop in our support vehicle, which is always near.
If you'd like to pedal for a bit longer than planned for the day, contact your guide. Our guides are prepared with alternative routes and ideas for additional sights. Just make sure you have something left in the tank for the next day!
Yes. A support vehicle accompanies every multi-day tour. It carries your luggage between stops, keeps spare gear, tools, water, and snacks on hand, and is always nearby if you need a lift over a tough climb or a mechanical fix.
We ride gravel bikes (Canyon Grail or similar). The route mixes asphalt, gravel tracks and singletrack through Transylvanian hills and forests.
All of our tours provide an eBike option; however, the type of eBike might not match the style of the tour. E.g. we might be able to only offer electric mountain bikes.
Absolutely!
And since all of our tours include the cost of bike and gear rental, these costs will of course be subtracted from the price. Please inquire and ask for an exact price if you plan to bring your bike.
When you sign up for your trip, we will work with you to determine your bike size and fit. On the first day of your trip, your guides will adjust your bike to your comfort and preferences to ensure an excellent fit. Your guides are always available to make small adjustments throughout the week.
All bikes come with a helmet and lights (front and rear).
All bikes come with an SPD pedal by default. If you plan to bring your own cycling shoe, let us know in advance so we can accommodate you with a suitable pedal.
