Itinerary

Tour description

Embark on a scenic bike trip from Budapest to Szentendre, and discover the beauty of this charming city for yourself. Our tours will start at Clark Adam square, at the foot of the famous Chain Bridge. From here, we will ride along the Danube and across Margaret Island.

Our first stop will be in Óbuda to check out its charming main square. From here, we will pass by the Old Gas Factory and the Római-part, one of the favorite weekend getaway spots for locals. As we exit Budapest, we will follow a winding forest road and go past Lupa lake. We will enter Szentendre through its lovely riverside promenade.

We'll have a quick bite, maybe some good old Lángos, before heading out to the open-air ethnographic museum, the Skanzen. It showcases the traditional architecture and rural way of life of Hungary's past. Visitors to the museum can see a range of authentic buildings and structures, including houses, churches, and farmsteads, that have been carefully reconstructed to give a glimpse into Hungary's rural heritage. You can also see live demonstrations of traditional crafts and activities, such as weaving, pottery, and blacksmithing.

Back in Szentendre's old town, you will have the chance to admire the colorful houses and buildings that line the streets and stop at the many art galleries and studios to admire the works of local artists. Before heading back to Budapest along the Danube River, we'll stroll through the town's bustling squares and enjoy a cup of coffee and a delicious Hungarian meal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Before your trip

What makes our cycling holidays different?

We offer small-group, guided cycling day trips led by Peter, our founder and a local. You ride at your own pace with someone who knows every corner of the route, handles the logistics, and makes sure the stops along the way are worth it.

What language is the tour in?

Tours are guided in English by Peter, our founder and a local with deep knowledge of these regions.

What level of fitness do I need to participate?

This is an easy day ride. If you ride a bike occasionally, you'll be fine. The route is completely flat with no climbs.

How big are the groups?

This is a one-day tour with a maximum of 12 participants.

Can I travel with kids?

Children aged 14 and over are welcome on this tour. eBikes are available for riders aged 16 and over.

Do I need travel insurance?

Travel insurance is not included in the tour price. We strongly recommend purchasing a policy that covers adventure activities — the kind typically used for skiing, covering medical evacuation and cycling-related incidents.

What is the best time of year for a cycling tour?

Our tours run from April to October. The best months are May, June, and September — comfortable temperatures, quiet roads, and the landscape at its best. July and August are fine for most tours but can be hot. April and October offer dramatic scenery but colder mornings and occasional rain, so pack layers.

Booking

What's included in the price?

The price includes: bike rental and helmet, a 3-course meal, entry to the Skanzen open-air museum, and an English-speaking local guide.

How far in advance do I need to book?

We can accommodate bookings up to 48 hours before departure. For peak dates in summer and autumn, we recommend booking at least 2–4 weeks ahead.

What is your cancellation policy?

The deposit is 70% refundable up to 30 days before the tour start date.

Bookings are 100% transferable to another person up to 30 days before the tour.

If Wiredonkey Cycling Tours cancels the tour for any reason, 100% of all payments made will be refunded.

No refunds are provided for no-shows or late arrivals once the tour has started.

Can I book a private or custom tour?

Yes. Any of our tours can be run as a private group — just get in touch to discuss dates and pricing. If you'd like a fully custom itinerary, we're happy to build something around your preferences, pace, and dates. Find out more about custom cycling tours.

During the trip

What happens if I can't finish the whole distance?

There are several train stations along the route where we can hop on a train back to Budapest if needed.

Can I ride for longer distances?

If you'd like to pedal for a bit longer than planned for the day, contact your guide. Our guides are prepared with alternative routes and ideas for additional sights.

Bikes and gear

What bikes do we ride?

You can choose between a road bike or a trekking bike based on your preference. We typically ride Canyon Endurace or similar road bikes, and Canyon Pathlite or similar trekking bikes, but the exact model depends on availability. The entire 55km route is on asphalt.

Do you provide eBikes?

All of our tours provide an eBike option; however, the type of eBike might not match the style of the tour. E.g. we might be able to only offer electric mountain bikes.

Can I bring my own bike?

Absolutely!

And since all of our tours include the cost of bike and gear rental, these costs will of course be subtracted from the price. Please inquire and ask for an exact price if you plan to bring your bike.

How do you ensure every guest has a comfortable fit on their bike?

When you sign up for your trip, we will work with you to determine your bike size and fit. Your guides will adjust your bike to your comfort and preferences to ensure an excellent fit. Your guides are always available to make small adjustments.

What other gear is included?

All bikes come with a helmet and lights (front and rear).

All bikes come with a push pedal by default. If you plan to bring your own cycling shoe, let us know in advance so we can accommodate you with a suitable pedal.
