Join us on a leisurely ride on one of Hungary’s most scenic bike paths. Breeze downhill and sweat it out uphill through the vineyards of the Etyek wine region. After some effort, we’ll enjoy cool local white wines and a 3-course meal to regenerate. We will end the tour at beautiful Lake Velence.
Price includes: bike rental; 3-course home-cooked meal; tasting of 2 wine varieties; train tickets back home; English speaking local guide.
Your tour begins in the picturesque Szent Gellért square in Budapest. From there, we will follow bike paths and quiet town roads to the start of the BuBa (Budapest - Balaton) bike path near the Kamaraerdő forest.
We will follow the BuBa to our first significant highlight, which comes after 24 kilometres when we ride over the spectacular railway viaduct in Biatorbágy. Today, it's transformed into a cycling bridge, and it was once the scene of the country's largest train bombing.
From here, we ride by the stunning Bia lake, which we can admire from above and roll into the wine town of Etyek, also called Budapest's vineyards. We'll visit the Körpince, a unique square with roughly 30 cellars arranged in a circular fashion.
By now, you're 32 kilometres in and must be tired. We'll be dropping by a local farmhouse for a warm home-cooked meal, accompanied by two glasses of cool white wine.
Now that everyone's reenergized, we'll attack the tour's most arduous climb – as you do after a 3-course meal. The good news is it will only get easier from here. And this stretch of road is also a feast for the eyes – the most scenic part of the BuBa. We'll arrive in Velence for a quick peek at the lake, maybe a short swim or gelato on the beach.
And what about getting back to Budapest? We'll take the train, of course (as all the hip local cyclists do)!
We offer small-group, guided cycling day trips led by Peter, our founder and a local. You ride at your own pace with someone who knows every corner of the route, handles the logistics, and makes sure the stops along the way are worth it.
Tours are guided in English by Peter, our founder and a local with deep knowledge of these regions.
This is a moderate day ride. If you ride a bike occasionally, you'll manage well. The pace is relaxed and there are a couple of short climbs, but no special fitness is required.
This is a one-day tour with a maximum of 12 participants.
Children aged 14 and over are welcome on this tour. eBikes are available for riders aged 16 and over.
Travel insurance is not included in the tour price. We strongly recommend purchasing a policy that covers adventure activities — the kind typically used for skiing, covering medical evacuation and cycling-related incidents.
Our tours run from April to October. The best months are May, June, and September — comfortable temperatures, quiet roads, and the landscape at its best. July and August are fine for most tours but can be hot. April and October offer dramatic scenery but colder mornings and occasional rain, so pack layers.
The price includes: bike rental and helmet, a 3-course meal, tasting of 2 local wine varieties, train tickets back to Budapest, and an English-speaking local guide.
We can accommodate bookings up to 48 hours before departure. For peak dates in summer and autumn, we recommend booking at least 2–4 weeks ahead.
The deposit is 70% refundable up to 30 days before the tour start date.
Bookings are 100% transferable to another person up to 30 days before the tour.
If Wiredonkey Cycling Tours cancels the tour for any reason, 100% of all payments made will be refunded.
No refunds are provided for no-shows or late arrivals once the tour has started.
Yes. Any of our tours can be run as a private group — just get in touch to discuss dates and pricing. If you'd like a fully custom itinerary, we're happy to build something around your preferences, pace, and dates. Find out more about custom cycling tours.
There are several train stations along the route where we can hop on a train back to Budapest if needed.
If you'd like to pedal for a bit longer than planned for the day, contact your guide. Our guides are prepared with alternative routes and ideas for additional sights.
You can choose between a road bike or a trekking bike based on your preference. We typically ride Canyon Endurace or similar road bikes, and Canyon Pathlite or similar trekking bikes, but the exact model depends on availability. The entire 65km route is on asphalt.
All of our tours provide an eBike option; however, the type of eBike might not match the style of the tour. E.g. we might be able to only offer electric mountain bikes.
Absolutely!
And since all of our tours include the cost of bike and gear rental, these costs will of course be subtracted from the price. Please inquire and ask for an exact price if you plan to bring your bike.
When you sign up for your trip, we will work with you to determine your bike size and fit. Your guides will adjust your bike to your comfort and preferences to ensure an excellent fit. Your guides are always available to make small adjustments.
All bikes come with a helmet and lights (front and rear).
All bikes come with a push pedal by default. If you plan to bring your own cycling shoe, let us know in advance so we can accommodate you with a suitable pedal.
